What happened
Shares of Ollie's Bargain Outlet ( OLLI 0.74% ) were trading 5.8% lower as of 1:05 p.m. EDT Friday as investors responded to the second-quarter miss it reported after the market close Thursday.
So what
CEO John Swygert insisted he was "very pleased" with the company's performance because its "two-year stack basis" for comparable-store sales growth was 15.3% -- in other words, same-store sales were 15.3% higher in Q2 2021 than they were in Q2 2019, before the pandemic hit.
NASDAQ: OLLI
Nevertheless, the fact remains that Ollie's total net sales declined by 21% in comparison to last year's Q2 as same-store sales fell by 28%. Earnings per share declined year over year as well, from $1.50 to $0.52.
Now what
Will things get better or worse in the second half? Excellent question. Next question please -- because instead of offering investors guidance about what to expect for the remainder of 2021, Ollie's management begged off.

What happened
Shares of Ollie's Bargain Outlet Holdings ( NASDAQ:OLLI) are down 27.3% at 1:46 p.m. EDT on Aug. 29, following the release of the company's second-quarter results yesterday afternoon.
So what
Ollie's sales growth was driven by new stores. The company said it ended the second quarter with about 18% more stores than it had one year ago. Moreover, management said that the new stores, while performing well, were also responsible for shrinking comps in its existing store base.
Now what
The biggest takeaway? Investing in growth stocks can be hard, and Ollie's fully demonstrates that. Just a year removed from stellar growth metrics, the company's aggressive expansion plans seem to be both driving new stores, but taking a bite out of sales from some older locations.
What happened
Although the company reported better-than-anticipated revenue and earnings last quarter, Ollie's Bargain Outlet Holdings ( OLLI 1.86% ) shares lost 17.6% of their value on Thursday after financial guidance failed to excite investors.
So what
The discount retailer's shares ended up in the bargain bin today despite sales jumping 19.1% year over year to $283.6 million and adjusted earnings per share (EPS) increasing 45.5% year over year to $0.32.
Now what
The guidance is arguably at the lower end of what industry-watchers were hoping, but today's sell-off does feel overdone given the quarter's performance, and the fact that the guidance was actually an increase from the guidance issued following the fiscal second quarter.
