Why is my power supply fan so fast?

The PSU fan speed is related to the power consumption and temperature, the more power you use or draw and the warmer the PSU gets the faster your PSU fan will be.

What is PSU (power supply unit)?

PSU or Power Supply Unit is one of the most important components of a PC because it is the only component that provides power to all your internal computer components that include a processor, motherboard, hard drive, SSD, graphics card, case fans, etc. It can get hot during load and for this, it comes equipped with a fan for cooling.

Should PSU fan be up or down?

With PSU Shroud. Some computer cases come with a PSU shroud or cover that acts as an extra protection for the power supply and also for the bottom mounted drives. Generally, the PSU shroud is a solid metal cover with no vents (mostly), so in such cases the position of the fan should remain down only regardless of anything.

What happens if you don't have a power supply fan filter?

Also, the PSU will accumulate much more dust because of no fan filter, and there is also a risk of something dropping inside the PSU through fan grill, which may cause serious damage to your power supply.

Where is the PSU mounted on a computer?

There are only two positions where computer cases allow you to mount the PSU, which is either on the top or at the bottom.

Also, the PSU will accumulate much more dust because of no fan filter, and there is also a risk of something dropping inside the PSU through fan grill, which may cause serious damage to your power supply. In a custom water-cooled system, you don’t want to keep the PSU fan up, because if somehow the liquid gets leaked and accidentally drops inside ...

Why is it important to mount a PSU?

It is very important to mount the PSU in a correct manner or orientation because if you do it wrong then you can restrict the PSU airflow, and it can result in damage to the power supply and maybe some other components. So, here I am going to tell you on how to properly mount your power supply, and whether the fan side should remain up or down, ...

Can you put a PSU fan in a PC case?

This is the only way to fit a PSU in these cases. However, I don’t think there are many cases like this out there, but if they are then you should avoid buying them in the first place, and rather go for a PC case with bottom vents and air filter for the PSU.

Hi, I have a corsair tx650m gold and im thinking about replacing the stock fan, all the fans in my case are noctua and are super silent, and the stock fan of the psu its loud. How can i know if the replacement fan is going to be enough to cool the psu? Where can i find the stock fan specifications? Which noctua fan do you think that would be the best choice for this purpose?.

mariushm

You normally have to make sure you match or exceed the CFM value ( cfm - cubic feet per minute ) and get the proper fan type (high static pressure OR high airflow)

mariushm

The power supply uses a 2 wire fan. It isn't aware of the fan's rpm (because there's no 3rd wire) and it doesn't use PWM to adjust the fan speed because there's no 4th wire.

Thanks again!! First of all sorry for beeing so insistent. I can conect the fan to my motherboard so the way that the psu controls the fan its not a problem. Also, my cpu its an undervolted non K i7 7700 so mybe a fan with less CFM is enough. Im going to make some tests with the noctua fans that i have around, i will post the results. Thank again for you time!.

did you end up replacing your PSU fan? and is the fan connected to the PSU fan header or outside to something else?

First up, please do not tell me about the dangers associated with opening PSUs. I know what I am doing, the dangers involved, and that I will have to modify the fan to be 2-pin compatible.

Thermosman

Noctua fans are good and are generally quiet enough. You could also get corsair maglev fans, which are very quiet also.

Silent Wings 3. They are also used be be quiet it self for the expensiv PSUs.

I live in New Zealand. So yes I can order from amazon etc, although I often wind up needing freight forwarding which sends the price through the roof. If I could get them at a reasonable price, NB or silent wings are what I would be going for.

I am happy to live where noiseblocker and be quiet are designed and have good availability. I don't know about mightyape but they have SilentWings 3 for 39 nz dollar including shipping. Noiseblocker seem to be more difficult to get.

WoodenMarker

Thats the 120mm variant. And I do not trust mightyape. They are a somewhat dodgy online retailer with quite a few very sketchy reviews. There are alot of those in NZ.
