Is the IDI a good engine?
I have been wanting to put a 12v cummins in it for better mpg and a lil more torque. I also have an early 94 f350 wrecked parts truck with a turbo'd idi 7.3 with 125,000 miles on it backed by a ZF 5 speed. I have had some people trying to tell me recently that the idi was a good dependable engine that was known for lasting a long time.
Can I put a turbo Idi in a gas truck?
The problem with the turbo idi's is the turbo housing is very restrictive and part of the reason for low hp numbers. The idi is a very good motor and in a original diesel truck a good set up but i would not swap it into a gas truck its just to much work for not enough gain.

With a turbo they are decent powered for what they are. Some people run up to 18-20 PSI on them (recommend heads studs). Head studs are cheaper for the 6.9L's (or they used to be at least). If you threw an intercooler in as well it would help with higher boost.

You can rebuild them for $30 bucks or buy a gear reduction starter from db electric for $80 and start like a powerstroke.
