Specialty chip maker Nvidia ( NASDAQ:NVDA) just closed out a record year with its fiscal fourth-quarter 2022 revenue showing strength in several of its target growth markets. But after the stock gained 125% in 2021, investors are feeling the report wasn't enough.
So what
While the company is working to grow its omniverse business in professional visualization and its automotive exposure, Nvidia's gaming and data center sales still made up over 87% of total revenue. Those two segments also both realized record annual sales, growing 61% and 58%, respectively, over the prior year.
Now what
The company mostly known for gaming and graphics cards evolved over the course of the past year. While its gaming and data center businesses still dominate, professional visualization -- what CEO Jensen Huang refers to as the omniverse -- more than doubled year over year.
Earnings day is less than a week away
I like things that go "boom." Sonic or otherwise, that means I tend to gravitate towards defense and aerospace stocks. But to tell the truth, over the course of a dozen years writing for The Motley Fool, I have covered -- and continue to cover -- everything from retailers to consumer goods stocks, and from tech to banks to insurers as well.
What happened
After dropping steeply early Thursday morning, then recovering in the late morning, it's afternoon now, and Nvidia ( NASDAQ:NVDA) stock is down again -- by 2% as of 2:25 p.m. ET.
Now what
I think the simpler and more likely reason that Nvidia stock is showing weakness Thursday is that some investors are stepping to the sidelines in advance of the chipmaker's upcoming earnings report next Wednesday, so as to not get caught in a downdraft if the news is bad.
What happened
Up again, down again semiconductor stock Nvidia ( NVDA 1.72% ) is... down again in Friday afternoon trading, falling 2.9% through 12:45 p.m. ET.
So what
Nvidia has benefited from a "strong holiday gaming season," explained Citigroup in a note covered today on StreetInsider.com, as well as from "solid data center demand trends." Although the global semiconductor shortage continues to weigh on sales volumes, Citi thinks that "gaming/networking foundry supply [will] improve in 2H this year," helping to boost revenues..
Now what
CES 2022 is winding down now and, if truth be told, none of Nvidia's new product announcements there really helped the stock out very much.
