Shares of electric vehicle start-up Lucid Group ( NASDAQ:LCID) were trading higher on Tuesday, adding to its notable run-up even as rivals' stocks have slumped amid broad concerns about the potential collapse of a debt-laden Chinese property developer.

So what

Auto investors are clearly excited about Lucid: The company's stock bucked the market's trend during Monday's broad sell-off, closing up 4.8% on a day when nearly all of its rivals were down sharply.

Now what

Lucid will hold a series of events for investors and the media at its Arizona factory next week. I expect that it will begin ramping up production of the Air shortly thereafter, but I also expect we'll get more details about its plans during those events.

What happened

Excitement has been growing over electric vehicle start-up -- and potential strong Tesla competitor -- Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) as it gets closer to shipping its first vehicles. Today the company announced that will begin this Saturday, and the stock popped 10%. At 11:05 a.m. EDT, shares had given up some of those gains but remained up 5.3%.

So what

Lucid isn't simply delivering its first Air Dream Edition electric sedans this weekend. It is also holding a rally for the new owners hosted by Lucid leadership "on a route that showcases the vehicle's standout ride, handling, and performance capabilities," the company said.

Now what

Lucid expects to produce 520 of its Air Dream Edition vehicles at $169,000 each. They come in two versions -- Range and Performance. The Range editions can reach 520 miles on a single battery charge. That range significantly beats the Tesla Model S Plaid's, which is listed at 396 miles.

Lucid garners a lot of hype as a promising electric vehicle brand, which the stock's price might already reflect

Electric vehicle start-up Lucid Group ( LCID -4.56% ) was one of 2021's most anticipated special purpose acquisition (SPAC) stocks. Tesla 's ( TSLA -5.94% ) success has drawn much attention to the electric vehicle (EV) industry, where investors are looking for the next big thing.

Following the Tesla playbook

Lucid has a little bit of Tesla in its DNA. CEO Peter Rawlinson used to work for Tesla; he was a chief engineer for its flagship car, the Tesla Model S. Given Tesla's success, it might not be surprising to see Rawlinson crafting Lucid's strategy to resemble his former employer's.
