A short report highlights allegations of fraud at the solar installer
I like things that go "boom." Sonic or otherwise, that means I tend to gravitate towards defense and aerospace stocks. But to tell the truth, over the course of a dozen years writing for The Motley Fool, I have covered -- and continue to cover -- everything from retailers to consumer goods stocks, and from tech to banks to insurers as well.
What happened
Shares of Vivint Solar ( NYSE:VSLR) stock are getting hit hard again this morning, down 5.8% as of noon EDT. In fact, Vivint Solar stock has tumbled an astonishing 21% since the week began -- and now we finally know why.
So what
Now, Marcus Aurelius doesn't actually come out and say that it believes the allegations in these lawsuits are true.
Now what
What it does seem to believe, though, is that even the taint of the allegations has the power to create "substantial downside potential" in the stock -- if not from damages ordered after successful lawsuits, then perhaps from sales lost as consumers begin to shy away from the company.
Massive losses eclipse Vivint's stock, and the forecast looks pretty cloudy, too

What happened
Shares of solar power lessor and solar system seller Vivint Solar ( NYSE:VSLR) dropped 15% in early trading Friday -- probably not a surprising result given that Vivint just reported losing $0.22 per share last quarter.
So what
After all, Vivint Solar's results were objectively pretty bad. Sales of $69.4 million in the quarter grew a bare 2% year over year -- not much for a "growth stock" -- and sales of solar systems were down 20%. The company's net loss of $0.22 per share was twice as bad as the $0.11 Vivint lost in last year's Q1.
Now what
Granted, the news wasn't all bad. I'm kind of grasping at straws here, but it looks like quarterly sales just edged out analyst estimates. Also, in the post-earnings conference call, management reiterated past guidance for 15% growth in "install volume" on its solar systems (but gave no specific revenue or earnings/losses guidance).
What happened

So what
This morning various outlets began reporting on a shift in pricing strategy at Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) -- which (as you may know) produces not just electric cars, but solar panels to power them, and batteries to hold that power.
Now what
This is all very hypothetical at this point. What's more, even if Tesla's pricing move does end up hurting Vivint, it's still so new that it's highly unlikely to affect Vivint's results next month at all.
