What happened

Shares of Sonos ( NASDAQ:SONO) are getting crushed on Thursday, after reporting results for its fiscal third quarter of 2020. Revenue was down and the company reported a big net loss. As of 11:30 a.m. EDT, the stock was down 15%.

So what

Citron Research previously published a bullish report on Sonos, believing the company was undervalued. It set a $30 price target on the stock, and even suggested Apple should acquire the company. Investors piled into the stock on the news.

Now what

This story is a good reminder of why a long-term view is needed in investing. In my opinion, the report from Citron Research was good and contained many valid points. However, investors were overly fixated on this quarterly report, forgetting that nobody is clairvoyant. Unforeseen factors are sending Sonos stock lower, at least for now.

What happened

Sonos ( SONO -2.27% ) shares lost 18.5% in September, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence, as investors reacted to the company's supply chain challenges and relatively high valuation. This is yet another instance of inflation driving up production costs, and it's unclear how much of that can be passed along to consumers.

So what

Sonos recently announced new products, new programming on Sonos Radio, and price increases to existing products. The management team has made it no secret that the consumer audio company is impacted by supply chain disruptions, and the global semiconductor shortage is like playing a role here as well.

Now what

Sonos announced price increases across all of its products, which looks like a shrewd move right now. Sonos markets high-end audio equipment, so its target customers are less likely to change their buying habits due to higher price points. These consumers were already prioritizing brand and quality over price.
