BlackBerry beat earnings, but it still lost a lot of money

I like things that go "boom." Sonic or otherwise, that means I tend to gravitate towards defense and aerospace stocks. But to tell the truth, over the course of a dozen years writing for The Motley Fool, I have covered -- and continue to cover -- everything from retailers to consumer goods stocks, and from tech to banks to insurers as well.

What happened

Shares of BlackBerry Limited ( NYSE:BB), the once-smartphone maker transformed into a security software specialist, crashed in Friday morning trading, and are now down 11.5% as of 11:05 a.m. EST.

So what

From a pro forma perspective, BlackBerry did exceed expectations. Adjusted earnings for the fiscal third quarter 2020 were $0.02 per share, versus the $0.01 per share loss analysts had predicted. Quarterly adjusted sales of $224 million likewise exceeded forecasts for $219.7 million.

Now what

In short, BlackBerry management could make all the arguments it wanted about the quarter being "solid" -- but the numbers still look pretty glaringly bad. In total, BlackBerry has now racked up $830 million in losses over the past 12 months. Revenue is sliding and profit margins deteriorating.

Will BlackBerry stock pull back?

In January, Reddit traders targeted BlackBerry stock in the same way they hit GameStop shares. A swarm of sudden interest sent the valuations of both companies significantly higher. GameStop stock is already correcting, and investors worry BB shares will follow suit.

Shares of BlackBerry ( NYSE:BB) declined 10% in September, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. The market suffered from broad declines in the beginning of the month, which hit tech stocks particularly hard, and BlackBerry reported fiscal second-quarter results near the end of the month.

So what

Investors had mixed reactions to the earnings release, sending shares up as much as 11% that day before they closed down modestly. Adjusted revenue grew slightly to $266 million, which resulted in adjusted net income of $62 million, or $0.11 per share.

BlackBerry launched Spark, a suite of enterprise end-point security services, earlier this year, and CEO John Chen said that customer interest for the offering was strong and that demand was growing. The company has seen some success in getting customers to upgrade, helping to offset some of the weakness in other segments like BTS.
