Stocks can rise and fall without good explanation or fair warning

What's great about exploring business and the economy is the insight it gives you into how things are in the world.
What happened
Shares of law enforcement technology company Axon Enterprise ( NASDAQ:AXON) fell 10% on Tuesday, and surprisingly, there isn't a good explanation for the drop. There weren't any new press releases, filings, or comments from analysts. This commentary doesn't feel satisfying; we feel like there always has to be something behind a big move like this.
So what
Unlike many other investments, the market is volatile. For example, it would be crazy to see home values fall 10% in a day. But stocks can, and frequently do, fall unexpectedly. Some say this is the risk that comes with investing in stocks. But I beg to differ. Axon's drop today merely illustrates the volatility that comes with stocks.
Now what
Risk is different from volatility. To me, risk is the chance a stock falls and stays below my cost basis for years. For a stock like Axon to stay down that long, its business would need to start struggling. But this company isn't showing any signs of being challenged. In the third quarter of 2020, it had growth across the board.
No, the protests haven't gone away. But they've been replaced by a new story
I like things that go "boom." Sonic or otherwise, that means I tend to gravitate towards defense and aerospace stocks. But to tell the truth, over the course of a dozen years writing for The Motley Fool, I have covered -- and continue to cover -- everything from retailers to consumer goods stocks, and from tech to banks to insurers as well.
What happened
Shares of Axon Enterprise ( NASDAQ:AXON), the maker of Taser stunguns and also Axon police body cameras, saw its stock devastated in Thursday's sell-off. By the time trading was done, Axon shares ended down 12.8%.
So what
The past three weeks have seen a remarkable surge in investor interest in Axon Enterprise stock, which has soared 39% in price, culminating in one last, 3% gasp after investment bank JPMorgan raised its target price on the stock to $120 yesterday.
Now what
Both lines of thinking, by the way, seem logical to me. They hold just as true today as they did yesterday, and for investors bullish on Axon stock, they could still prove correct...with caveats.
The Taser maker is raising capital through a secondary offering

What happened
Shares of Axon Enterprise ( NASDAQ:AXON) have fallen today, down by 7% as of 2:15 p.m. EDT, after the company announced a secondary offering on Monday. The Taser and body camera specialist is looking to sell 3 million shares to beef up its balance sheet.
So what
Based on yesterday's closing price of approximately $100, issuing that quantity of new shares could raise around $300 million in fresh capital. The deal has not yet priced, so the amount that Axon is ultimately able to raise remains to be seen.
Now what
Generally speaking, it's common for stocks to fall because of secondary offerings due to the dilution to existing shareholders. Total shares outstanding after the offering closes would be a little over 63 million (assuming that underwriters do not exercise their options), which represents dilution of approximately 5%.
What happens when law enforcement agencies have their budgets cut?
After spending more than a decade travelling the world exploring different cultures and languages, I'm happy to now be contributing to the Motley Fool's mission to make the world smarter, happier, and richer. What's great about exploring business and the economy is the insight it gives you into how things are in the world.
What happened
Shares of Axon Enterprise ( NASDAQ:AXON) fell 15.3% in July, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. At one point, Axon stock was up 40% for 2020, as people see its product as a way to make law enforcement better.
So what
Axon kicked July off by announcing a new contract with the Baltimore Police Department for Axon Records -- a service designed to make filing reports more efficient. The agency is one of the largest in the country, and already had an existing relationship with Axon.
Now what
No one has a crystal ball, and it's still early in the conversation for police reform. According to a Gallup poll, only 15% of Americans want to abolish the police outright, so this idea is unlikely to gain traction. Therefore, it's reasonable to assume there'll still be a form of law enforcement long term.
