So what

Shares of Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. ( OTC:HTZG.Q) were plunging today on an analyst downgrade that commented on a number of headwinds in the industry.

Now what

Barclays slashed its rating on Hertz from equal weight to underweight, and put a price target of $9 on the car-rental company, more than 50% below its current price.

The auto rental company drives into bankruptcy

Shares of Hertz are down by nearly 90% over the last three years as the car-rental industry, which has always struggled, has come under considerable pressure. Rival Avis Budget Group, meanwhile, is down nearly 50% over that time span. With that track record and the shifting industry dynamics, a comeback for Hertz seems unlikely.

So what

Shares of Hertz Global Holdings ( OTC:HTZG.Q) fell 80% on Tuesday after the rental car giant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware. The filing should help the company renegotiate some of its debt and keep the brand operational, but shareholders are unlikely to be so lucky.

Now what

Hertz fell into bankruptcy late Friday, a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on travel demand. Hertz said that global revenue fell more than 70% year over year in April and was not enough to service its $19 billion in total debt.

Referenced Symbols

Shares of Hertz closed at $0.55 apiece on Tuesday, well below the $20 price hit in late February. That's a tough pill for shareholders to swallow.

So what

Shares of Hertz Global Holdings ( OTC:HTZG.Q), a vehicle rental company, continued their roller-coaster ride with a 14% drop Tuesday morning after investors digested the reports surrounding a potential bankruptcy announcement as soon as this week -- but a last-second forbearance from lenders may have saved the day.
