In 1966, the Winter Show received the new name, The Black Hills Stock Show® when ownership of the event was passed on to Central States Fair, INC. It wasn’t until 1978 that the first “Winter Rodeo” occurred in conjunction with the stock show.

This year's event takes place Jan. 29 - Feb. 6, 2021 , at both the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center & the James Kjerstad Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds.
What is rodeo in the Black Hills?
Rodeo is big in the Black Hills. Rodeo Rapid City, a PRCA sanctioned rodeo, runs numerous nights. Timed events like team roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing, bronc and bull riding are all included. One of the popular events, Broncs for Breakfast, features cowboys saddling up to “ride as ride can” for eight seconds on a “rank and rough” horse. Different from a PRCA rodeo event, where they ride in a bronc saddle, these competitors ride in normal ranch saddles. The event will start with a biscuit and gravy breakfast at 8 a.m. with ranch bronc riders ready to buck out at 10 a.m. The top eight riders will advance to the finals for a chance at $6,000 prize money.
