That gives investors a reason for optimism. Still, at 20 times sales, it requires a great deal of faith in both the product and the management team. This was even more true when the stock was going for 30 times sales prior to its recent stock price decline.

What happened

Shares of Oatly Group ( NASDAQ:OTLY) were sliding last month; as analysts continued to sour on the oat milk company, it became one of many broken IPOs in 2021. According to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, the stock fell 11% in November.

So what

There was no major company-specific news out on Oatly last month, but some negativity from analysts and other concerns such as the impact of rising interest rates on high-priced growth stocks seemed to weigh on the stock.

Oatly's slide was a continuation of a decline that's now lasted several months as investors have balked at the valuation for the alternative milk company. Based on its guidance of at least $635 million in revenue this year, the stock now trades at a price-to-sales ratio of about 8, which is still rich for consumer goods stock.

Not well, I’m afraid. Oatly listed in the US back in May and shares have coughed up almost 60% since then. Although backed by heavy weights like private equity kings Blackstone and celebs like Oprah Winfrey, Oatly is having to compete in a market where there are more alternatives every month.

Is there any good news here?

Oatly says it expects FY 2021 revenue to exceed $635m compared to the previous outlook where it was talking about $690m. Revenues are up, there’s no denying that (a 49.2% increase no less). Gross profit was $125m with a 27% gross profit margin. While profits overall are down slightly, volumes are up.

What does the Armchair Trader think?

We’d be cautious with Oatly. We like the product, we like the alternative to dairy story, and with pressure on global agriculture post-COP 26, we think the shift off dairy is going to continue long term. We would expect Oatly to continue to achieve growth in sales and distribution globally and it has a good brand to boot.
