Chart for HNST

The Honest Company is a digitally-native, mission-driven brand focused on leading the clean lifestyle movement, creating a community for conscious consumers and seeking to disrupt multiple consumer product categories. Introduction

The Honest Company was founded in 2011 by Hollywood actress Jessica Alba and makes personal care and baby items. In 2013 the company had sales of just over $50 million and has increased that 6 fold by the end of 2020 to over 300 million.

Thesis

I show through calculation of book value, modeling discounted cash flows, and by performing a peer review that The Honest Co. is trading below its intrinsic value and is a buy while priced below $14.18 (the intrinsic value of the stock).

Detailed Calculations

To calculate book value I divided the shareholder's equity listed in the (TTM) column of HNST's financial pages on Seeking Alpha's website ( available here) by the number of shares outstanding (listed on the same page). Specifically, I divided -236.8 million by 34.1 million for a book value of -$6.94.

Discussion

At first glance I really didn't care for the management team. And that was going to make it a very hard sell for me to get behind this stock. The website is full of people who look like they are out of Hollywood and the last place they would be caught was a corporate America conference room.

Potential Issues

The largest issue for this company is that it does not capitalize on its digital properties and continues to rely so heavily on its third party retailers (Target ( TGT ), Walmart ( WMT ), and Amazon ( AMZN )). By relying on these third parties HNST is forced to keep its margin low (34% at the time of writing).

Conclusion

After computing the book value, modeling discounted cash flows, performing a peer review, and doing a deep dive on the company's management team, I think this stock is a strong buy while priced under $14.18.
