What happened

Popularized by Reddit traders on WallStreetBets early in the week then crushed by brokers' reaction to the WSB phenomenon on Thursday, shares of BlackBerry Limited ( BB -2.63% ) are taking off again in Friday trading now that some brokers who had limited or banned purchases of heavily shorted stocks yesterday are lifting their bans.

So what

With WSB unshackled, it's no great mystery why BlackBerry stock is hot again -- but here's the really curious thing: Some of the folks you'd expect to be pleased by this development are actually missing out on the rally instead.

NYSE: BB

Whereas BlackBerry stock hit an intraday five-year high of $28.77 per share on Wednesday (and still trades north of $16 right now), some of the people who know BlackBerry's business best headed for the exits and sold their shares for a paltry $12.63 to $13.01 apiece.

Now what

What should investors take away from this news, aside from perhaps a feeling of schadenfreude at the corner-office execs missing out on the rally? Although it is true that investors sell stock for many reasons and that it can be dangerous to make assumptions about why they sell, the fact remains:

The meme stock craze has blurred the picture for BlackBerry stock

I’ve said it many times. The meme stock craze is something I can do without. Of course, it’s really nice to benefit from it. However, it’s not a sign of a healthy, rational market. A rational market trades on fundamentals. This makes sense. It gives us a chance to figure out which stocks are good buys. It gives us a chance to make predictions.

BlackBerry stock has tons of long-term value

In my view, the bottom line for BlackBerry stock is that it has massive upside in the long term. Award-winning technology, a strong financial position, and exposure to two of the biggest growth industries are the key themes that will take the stock higher.

Motley Fool: The bottom line

BlackBerry stock is a strong long-term buy, in my view. But today is not the time to buy it. It is, in fact, the time to take profits. We can wait for the stock to trade more in line with current fundamentals before buying back. Because the risk in the market in general is already high, since it’s trading at all-time highs.

Robinhood trading restrictions sap the short squeeze's strength

I like things that go "boom." Sonic or otherwise, that means I tend to gravitate towards defense and aerospace stocks. But to tell the truth, over the course of a dozen years writing for The Motley Fool, I have covered -- and continue to cover -- everything from retailers to consumer goods stocks, and from tech to banks to insurers as well.

What happened

BlackBerry ( NYSE:BB) stock tanked 20% in 10:30 a.m. EST trading today.

So what

BlackBerry stock sits on a list of eight specific stocks currently restricted for trading on the popular Robinhood stock trading app. Robinhood states that its customers are currently not permitted to buy new shares of BlackBerry if they own 700 or more shares, nor buy new option contracts if they own more than 700 such contracts.

Now what

Yesterday, Robinhood announced that it has secured $3.4 billion in financing "to invest in record customer growth, including $1 billion in funding announced on January 29." The company had previously explained that it imposed trading restrictions in the first place because it lacked the cash to meet "deposit requirements" imposed by its securities clearinghouse..

What happened

BlackBerry 's ( BB 1.51% ) stock price sank 9.7% Wednesday, following the release of the software company's fourth-quarter earnings results.

So what

BlackBerry's revenue fell 25% year over year to $210 million. That was well below the $245 million Wall Street had expected.

Now what

BlackBerry's stock got caught up in the short squeeze mania that helped to drive up the prices of stocks like GameStop and AMC Entertainment in recent months. But while day traders can temporarily impact market prices, the long-term value of a business is ultimately determined by its sales and profits.

BB Stock and Connected Cars

As I’ve noted before, Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) embraced “the monetization of connected cars” this past November.

What BlackBerry Sells

One way to think about BlackBerry’s situation in connected cars is to compare it to Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ). Of course, that company sells operating systems for computers. But just as Microsoft has made money from software sales, BB can profit from selling OSs for our increasingly tech-advanced vehicles.

Spark Will Jump Start Revenue, Facebook Will Pay

Clearly, BlackBerry’s upside is not limited to the connected car space alone. To that end, in May 2020, the company announced Spark Suites. This new security product will provide companies and governments with “a range of tailored cybersecurity and endpoint management options.”

Bottom Line

It’s true — right now, BlackBerry’s shares are very volatile. Why? The Reddit stock forum, Wall Street Bets (WSB), recently targeted it alongside other names in a massive short squeeze. That situation could continue for some time.
