Excepting the brief downturn during the COVID-19 crisis that occurred earlier this year, the two biggest financial catastrophes in the past century happened under Republican administrations. The Great Depression began under Herbert Hoover, and the Great Recession began under George W. Bush.

This is not to say that the stock market is always better under Democratic presidents or that it always performs poorly under Republican leadership. The market saw a substantial increase in value under the Republican Ronald Reagan. It performed relatively poorly under the Nixon/Ford and Carter administrations.
