How are fuel injectors sized?

Fuel Injectors are sized by their flow rate. Flow rate is a measurement of how much fuel can be delivered over time. It is listed in pounds per hour (lbs./hr.) or cubic centimeters per minute (cc/min.).

What kind of injector does a GM truck use?

(Left) This is the original Bosch Jetronic injector with its EV1 connector that is also called the Minitimer. (Center) Unique within the GM LS style injectors is the early GM truck version that is just slightly taller than the later LS3 injector using the Mini-Delphi connector.

What kind of connector do I need for a truck injector?

Making this early truck injector unique is its Multec 2 connector. Since most aftermarket EFI systems target the more modern EV6 injectors, using the early truck injectors will often require an electrical adapter. What does a 20% fuel injector flow rate mean?

This lets the injector close 20% of the time at WOT which keeps it from overheating. An injector this size can also provide an accurate amount of fuel at low rpm. To calculate your required flow rate, use this formula:

What size are stock LS injectors?

How high can a stock 5.3 Rev?

The new heads, cam, and intake shifted the power curve higher in the rev range, as a stock 5.3L will produce peak power at just 5,400 rpm.

How much HP does a stock 5.3 LS have?

around 320 hpThe stock 5.3L is factory rated around 320 hp with 340 lb-ft of torque.

Can injectors be too big?

Bigger is not always better It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that bigger fuel injectors equal more power, but unless your engine is set up to deal with the extra fuel, you'll be on a fast track to trouble. The excess fuel will flood the engine and it either won't run at all, or will be running too rich.

How much HP will 120lb injectors support?

1900 horsepowerRated injector flow: 120 lb/hr @ 43 PSI. Supports up to 1900 horsepower.

Which is better high or low impedance injectors?

That low-amp current keeps the injector temperature lower, which makes it more reliable; that's why the high-impedance design is the most common injector style for OEM applications. Low-impedance injectors, also called peak-and-hold injectors, are sent a more powerful electrical signal, usually around 56 amps, to open.

How much HP do bigger injectors add?

10-20 moreLarger throttle body and injectors Depending on what type of engine you have, you can gain as much as 10-20 more horsepower and comparable torque. There is a catch, however. Go too large and you can lose power.

How much HP can 550cc injectors handle?

550 cc injectors will support about 500 bhp and maybe a bit more if you tweak the fuel pressure.

What size are e85 fuel injectors?

Registered. 500cc would be the smallest I'd recommend, and that's with much higher fuel pressure (>75psi). 650cc would be the min on a stock regulator if your motor isn't bone-stock, but anything up to 1200cc will work great.

What kind of heads does a Vortec 5.3 have?

First, my Truck Vortec 5.3 has a stock built short block, Patriot 61mm aluminum heads, Z06 Chevy performance cam. Should be starting motor for the first time very soon. Truck intake with stock injectors.

Can you post part number on fuel injectors?

Yeah you can post up the part # on the injectors if your not sure if they are flex fuel or not. They do flow well, if they are flex fuel, especially if you de-cap them.

How many lb fuel injectors are needed for a 5.3?

At the low end of the 5.3 spectrum, the LM7's 25 lb fuel injectors are going to max out before they reach the 400 horsepower stage, typically around the 380 horse mark. Gen IV injectors, particularly those on flex fuel models, are at or just above the 30 lb mark, which will bring you closer to 400 horses. Once you're reaching into the 500 horsepower plateau, you'll most likely be looking at a 42 lb injector for a naturally-aspirated engine.

What is a 5.3 liter engine?

The 5.3-liter LS engine is perhaps the most commonly swapped member of GM's Gen III and Gen IV family of V8s. Found in millions of pickups, vans, and SUVs, the sheer ubiquity of this LS V8 guarantees its popularity, as it's easy to find donor vehicles and the aftermarket has rushed to support the 5.3 with a huge volume of inexpensive parts.

How much horsepower does a 5.3 have?

A large number of 5.3 swaps make use of the Gen III LM7 engine, which offered between 270 and 295 hp and was sold from 1999 to 2007 across a wide range of Chevrolets and GMCs. Factory torque checked in as high as 335 lb-ft or as low as 315 lb-ft.

What is the difference between a Gen IV and a Gen III?

Many Gen IV engines came with more sophisticated fuel management technologies than the Gen III. Specifically, Active Fuel Management (AFM), which shuts down a bank of cylinders during steady state cruising in order to improve economy, and variable-valve timing (VVT), which works to better balance power and fuel consumption.

How much lift do you need for a cam?

Finally, keep in mind what modifications you'll need to make to support cams with higher valve lifts. If lift is 0.500 inches or less , you'll likely be fine with stock hardware in the valvetrain, but at 0.550 inches or higher you'll want to install heavier duty, or even dual valve springs. The trunion bearings on the stock LM7 rocker arms are also a known weak spot, and can be replaced entirely or upgraded, and with a new cam you'll want to install equally new lifters.

What is the camshaft on a 5.3 LS?

Given that almost every 5.3 LS was installed under the hood of a truck, it's perhaps no surprise that their factory camshaft (191 degrees at 0.050-inch lift in the LM7) is designed to balance power and fuel economy and favor low-rpm torque. Gen IV engines moved to somewhat more aggressive cam profiles (196 degrees in the LY5, for example), but still oriented towards task-focused towing and daily driving above all else.

How many ponies does a F.A.S.T intake have?

If you're more interested in high end power, there are intakes out there from F.A.S.T that accommodate larger throttle bodies while adding roughly 25 ponies, as well as tunnel ram designs that are good for roughly 30 percent more. Take care to match your intake with the goals of your build, and take into account whether you'll be using any power adders like nitrous or forced induction.

Fuel Injectors are sized by their flow rate. Flow rate is a measurement of how much fuel can be delivered over time. It is listed in pounds per hour (lbs./hr.) or cubic centimeters per minute (cc/min.).

Can you fine tune fuel injectors?

You might not find a fuel injector rated for your exact needs. However, you can Fine-Tune Flow Rate by adjusting fuel pressure.

What injectors are used in GM trucks?

This injector family portrait includes four of the five popular GM fuel injectors. From left to right: original Bosch Jetronic EV1, the tall LS1 style followed by the early LS truck injector, and on the far right the late LS3 EV6 style. The one missing version is the late truck injector that is the same height as the early truck LS piece but using the EV6 electrical connector.

What injectors did GM use in 2005?

Perhaps a bit earlier, around 2005, GM switched the passenger car injector style to the Gen IV, short LS3 style that uses the EV6 or USCAR connector. This is the shortest injector of all the factory squirters, but its size should not be confused with a lack of flow potential as these injectors can crank out the fuel.

What is the name of the Bosch fuel injection system?

The earliest reference is the Jetronic –the Bosch name for its early fuel injection system. This connector evolved into the Minitimer that now morphed to EV1. Right away, this becomes mystifying with three different ways to describe this electrical connector.

Why are Bosch injectors less popular?

These units are becoming less popular now mainly because they don’t deliver the high flow rates now demanded by today’s more powerful engines. These Bosch injectors used a connector that is referred to by no less than three different aliases.

Does GM carry injectors on trucks?

Unfortunately, GM didn’t carry this injector over to the trucks, choosing instead to go with an entirely different injector.

Can aluminum extension fittings be used in taller intake manifolds?

Swapping these newer, shorter injectors, in taller intake manifold applications opens up the opportunity for aluminum extension fittings that can increase the injector length to adapt these injectors to earlier applications. For example, ICT Billet offers three different length adapters for specific applications. We’ve listed their specs in a separate chart.

Do truck injectors need an adapter?
