What happened to the Vortec 350 engine?

The run on the Vortec 350 engine was relatively short: It hit the market in 1996 and was replaced with GM's new-generation engine line by 1999. Due to the short duration and its limited-performance injection system, not many aftermarket companies spent the time or money making performance parts for the Vortec fuel-injected 350 engines.

How much HP can a stock throttle body add?

Stock small-block throttle bodies only flow around 500 cfm (compared with a stock Q-jet that flows 750 cfm). It's possible to make around 275 hp with a stock TBI unit, so rather than go nuts on a heavily modified TBI, I'd suggest you start by making sure the existing TBI unit and injectors are in good shape.

Are vortec heads a good choice for a 300 hp?

These heads flow very well and would be a good choice to make 300 hp with a mild camshaft. However, the Vortec heads use a different intake bolt pattern that does not match up to the TBI intake manifold. There are ways around that by using a GM Performance Parts aluminum intake that bolts to the Vortec heads and features a stock mount for the TBI.

What is a GM Vortec engine?

GM's first-generation Vortec engine was derived from its fuel-injected predecessor, the throttle-body fuel injection (TBI). Both the TBI and Vortec engines used only two injectors to supply fuel to the 350ci V-8.

Is Vortec a throttle body?

GM's first-generation Vortec engine was derived from its fuel-injected predecessor, the throttle-body fuel injection (TBI).

What is the difference between TBI and Vortec?

Yes TBI is speed density based with MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) where the Vortec is based on MAF (Mass Air Flow). The vortec has a crank position sensor which tells the PCM when to fire the plugs. TBI gets its base timing set at the distributor. There's differences between the water pumps too.

How much HP can a 5.7 Vortec hold?

5.7 Vortec Transmissions The Chevy 5.7L Vortec engine was paired with a General Motors electronic four-speed automatic transmission (4L60E). It is rated at 255 horsepower at 4600 rpm and 330 foot-pounds (lb-ft) of torque at 2800 rpm.

Is the 5.7 Vortec an LS motor?

Although Vortec engines are "LS" based they are NOT LS engines IMO. Besides most Vortec's being iron block, as seen above there are some serious size differences and considerations depending on your project. VORTEC ENGINE IN CARS: For the most part, it will be challenging to put a Vortec truck engine into a car.

What's the difference between a regular 350 and a Vortec 350?

The regular 350 head uses a 90 degree bolt angle while the Vortec uses a 72 degree bolt angle. When the head is bolted to the engine, all the attachment bolts point straight up, as experienced mechanics know.

How much horsepower does a Vortec 350 have?

The 1996-2000 350ci Vortec 5700 engines enjoy lots of aftermarket support to help improve the 255 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque they're rated for at the crank. An engine swap can be quite costly, so putting even a quarter of those funds into your Vortec 350 engine could get you where you want to be.

Is a 5.7 Vortec a big block?

The big block, which debuted in 1958 at 348 cu in (5.7 L), was built in standard displacements up to 494 cu in (8.1 L), with aftermarket crate engines sold by Chevrolet exceeding 500 cu in (8.2 L)....Chevrolet big-block engineProduction1955–presentLayoutConfigurationNaturally aspirated 90° V-819 more rows

Is the 5.3 Vortec better than the 5.7 Vortec?

IMO-The 5.3 is definately a faster motor but the 5.7 seems to handle weight better. My 5.3 averages about 17mpg while and I got about 15mpg with my 5.7. It is hard to get a good comparison though. The 5.7 was a Z71 regular cab, short bed with an auto and 3.73s.

How can I get more horsepower out of my 5.7 Vortec?

Get more power out of your 5.7 Hemi and give your engine an extra punch with compressed air to blast through the cylinders. Turbochargers and superchargers give your Dodge Ram 1500 bolt on horsepower and torque while doing very little to your fuel efficiency.

What is so special about a Vortec engine?

The redesigned cylinder heads of a Vortec engine provides for improved combustion efficiency. The intake ports (reshaped) of the engine provides for better cylinder filling and fuel atomization by promoting higher air flow velocities to the combustion chambers via the ports.

What's the difference between a Vortec and LS?

While the performance car engines carried the LS designation, those designed for trucks and SUVs were given the Vortec name. The biggest difference between the Vortec engines and their car cousins was the use of iron blocks (mostly), and the fact that they were often smaller in displacement.

What was the last year for the 5.7 Vortec?

After 36 straight years of production, the 5.7 Chevy engine was technically discontinued in vehicles after the 2002 model year.

What size exhaust should I use for a 350 Chevy?

Even on a Q-jet-equipped, small-block 350 Chevy, the exhaust is the most critical point. You've addressed that perfectly with the 1 5/8-inch headers. Just be sure to include a 2 1/2-inch dual-exhaust system or a 3-inch single-exhaust and that part of the system will be acceptable.

How fast does a wide open throttle increase fuel pressure?

You should test any fuel pressure change with a WOT acceleration run in Second gear from about 30 to 60 mph.
