Does a bigger rear sprocket make you go faster?

A bigger rear sprocket/ smaller front sprocket will give you an increase in acceleration but decrease your top speed. A smaller rear sprocket/bigger front sprocket will reduce you acceleration but increase the top speed.

What does a smaller back sprocket do on a dirt bike?

You can gear up by using a smaller rear sprocket or a larger countershaft/front sprocket. Gearing up adds more speed and decreases the final drive ratio. You can gear down by using a larger rear sprocket or a smaller front sprocket. Gearing down reduces speed and increases the final drive ratio.

What sprocket size should I get?

This is determined by the the number of teeth on the front sprocket, compared to the number of teeth in the rear sprocket. For example, a motorcycle with a 17-tooth front sprocket and a 45-tooth rear sprocket would have a ratio of 2.65 (45 divided by 17 = 2.65).

Chain and Sprocket Size Recommendation

Chain width becomes a problem on the X ring chains. You want to look for a "narrow" x-ring. X-rings are great for wet conditions, otherwise a standard chain is fine. Standard chains are easier to maintain since you can just blast them, fling the water out, and then lube them.

chains and sprockets- CRF 250X

Hi, After some research I bought a DID narrow X-ring chain. Called "520VT2 Enduro Racing" I suspect any other chain will rub on the crankcase as there is very little room between the front sprocket and the crankcase. It cost NZ$205 (around US$165. (Yes I know we are being ripped off here downunder). cheers, Peter
