What is a bone-stock car?

It seems bone-stock often refers to a formal "sub-class" in organised stock car racing (like F1, F2, etc., at the higher end of car racing). The key requirement is that it should be standard, as supplied by the manufacturer (thus having "street tyres" is often the limiting factor), but they're often quite powerful vehicles.

Are stock cars street legal?

NASCAR cars are not street legal today; while they can be modified and tuned to drive on the street, the stock racing cars are not legal for roads. The main reason why these cars can't drive on the street is because they do not have the same safety features that a normal car would have.

10 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

We would say that this is a no-brainer, what with Toyota reliability and all, but this is the Baja 1000! This SUV has been entered in many times and has been driven by the legendary Toyota racer Ivan "Ironman" Stewart.

9 Volkswagen Beetle

Not only do these cars race in the Baja 1000 very often, they actually have their own class! Baja Bugs are often pictured as Mad Max-style beasts with a dune-buggy disposition, but not so for "Class 11." This refers to the class made up solely of old-model VW Beetles with no mods allowed except safety, reinforcement, and limited ground clearance.

8 Ford Raptor R

Ford was not messing around when they developed the SVT Ford Raptor, with the Le Mans-proven V8 under the hood. And again in 2016 when they replaced two pistons with twin turbos they took to the Baja 1000 to prove its capability. The "Raptor R Race Truck" (replacing the "SVT Raptor" got 3rd in its class.

7 Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution

The Mitsubishi Pajero Evo was made special for the Dakar rally. It came stock with those batman wingtips just for looks, and a beefy underbite-looking bumper for bashing into sand banks. The V6 made 276 horsepower and its all-wheel-drive was fearsome.

6 Hummer H3 Alpha

In 2009 two H3s took first place in both the "stock full" and "stock mini" classes. One was driven by legendary off-road racer Rod Hall and the other by his son, Chad Hall. Chad in stock full won by an impressive 4 hours and 58 minutes! Rod had almost two hours on the runner-up, a 4Runner.

5 Lexus LX 570

The genius of the Lexus LX 570 is that it's a highly off-road-capable luxury descendant of the Land Cruiser. It has a body-on-frame design shared with the Land Cruiser so it can be lifted to the maximum allowed by stock rules. In 2011 it got second in Stock Full, and it has also tackled the Baja 500 with some wins.

4 Chevy Colorado ZR2

The previously mentioned Rod Hall of Hall racing is responsible for two Chevy Colorados that each won more than once in the stock car class, again with his son Chad Hall.

I am new to the HPDE scene, ran my first 2 events last fall in my '09 Z06. As expected, I am hooked, and ready for the 2009 season. I plan on driving in at least 10 events.

C5. Shares a lot of parts with the C6 and if you can work on one, you can work on either. And, worse case, a C5 crashes very well.

A momentum car like the Miata can be much better to learn in at reasonable cost.

fastduo

The Miata is a great car and he will have fun....But, get ready for an upgrade when he is going to want to catch dad in the Z06. The Miata's are very popular track cars so it shouldn't be too hard to sell it when you are ready.

laze1

I recommend a Coupe or Sedan instead of a convertible for a Noob driver.....accidents do happen....The Miati is a great choice,,,but maybe NOT the safest car

laze1

I second this suggestion (350Z) They are readily available as used cars, plenty of parts availlable cheap, pretty much bullet-prove, and very safe to drive for two reasons; They don't have any bad handling characteristics / easy to drive pretty quickly, and are a very solid built Coupe body style.
