Among the many S&P 500 index funds available, this fund stands out for a wrong reason: It’s on the pricey side, with an expense ratio of 0.28 percent. That’s lower than it was a few years ago, but other firms, such as Vanguard, Fidelity, TIAA-CREF and Charles Schwab, offer similar funds at a much lower cost. Morningstar says, “This fund would have been a better choice 10 years ago, but competition from lower-cost peers has made it a relic.” The fund has returned 16.06 percent over the past five years and 13.65 percent over the past decade.
