How many RPMs on a 454?
Loves: Diesel I built a 73 2-bolt 454 with the stock cast crank that made 450+ and occasionally saw 6000 rpms. The HP level was well within limits, but I agree; keep your HP peak (cam choice) at a level that doesn't constantly require more than about 5500 rpms to get your power.
Do 454 cranks break things?
Very few of us have ever seen a crank come out of 454. Yeah, they can break things, but not very often. The big deal is to keep the rods in one piece. SCAT rods are prolly a better bet than recond Chevy rods. Not becasue the Chevy rods are not good, they are fine, but the recon price is too much if done right.
Is 6000 rpm too high for a 454 Trans?
Automatic cars through 5500rpm and 454s are pretty safe with the stock bolts. 396/427 shorter stroke is less taxing then 454 longer stroke so I'd not be worried about 6000 rpm. ANY shift-thyself std trans I'd be sure to get good rod bolts in there and resize the big ends.
Is the 454 mild cam a step up from stock?

How much cranking amps do I need?
A battery should be big enough to allow reliable cold starting. The standard recommendation is a battery with at least one Cold Cranking Amp (CCA) for every cubic inch of engine displacement (two for diesels).
How many cold cranking amps do I need for my truck?
The standard recommendation is that a vehicle battery should possess at least one CCA for every cubic inch of engine displacement (two CCAs in the case of diesel engines).
How many cranking amps do I need to start a truck?
How many Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) do I need for my car? 400 to 500 CCA will typically jump start any vehicle, including large pickup trucks and SUVs. A small car battery can be boosted with as little as 150 CCA while large SUVs and trucks will require 400 to 500 CCA.
Can you have too much cranking amps?
In general, one can always exceed the CCA spec. You probably do it on a warm day, with a charged battery. Having more potential current available will not hurt the car's electrical system.
Is 600 cold cranking amps enough?
The key to flawless cold-weather starts is to have a battery rated at least 600 CCA (cold cranking amps). Most standard car batteries are rated in the range of 300 to 500 CCA. They're fine for regular cars in most types of weather, including bitter cold.
Is 800 cold cranking amps good?
A: On average, a battery with 650 CCA is good for the cold climate. An 800 cold cranking amps battery ensures you'll start your car in any weather.
Is higher cranking amps better?
In general, for both CCA and RC, the higher the number the better. However, if you live in a cold climate, the CCA rating should be an important consideration in choosing a battery.
What size battery do I need for my truck?
Another option for finding out what size battery fits your truck is to look at the battery currently installed in your truck. Somewhere on the label, you'll typically find a specification that indicates the size of your battery.
Can cold cranking amps increase?
Expert Reply: In order to achieve maximum cranking amps you will want to wire your two 12 volt batteries in parallel (see photo). The output of 12 volts will remain the same but the capacity and cranking amps will become the sum of the two batteries.
Do you need lots of cold cranking amps?
Generally, the rule of thumb is 1 Cold Cranking Amp for every cubic inch of engine displacement (2 CCA for diesel engines). You'll often see engine displacement expressed in cubic centimeters (CC) or liters (L), which is the total cylinder volume of the engine.
What happens if I use a battery with higher CCA?
Generally speaking, it is easier to start an engine in a warm environment than in a cold one. The rating refers to the number of amps a 12-volt battery can deliver at 0°F for 30 seconds while maintaining a voltage of at least 7.2 volts. The higher the CCA rating, the greater the starting power of the battery.
Is a higher amp battery better?
As a general rule, a higher Ah battery is better for delivering more current, which implies more power in watts. A higher Ah rated car battery will generally deliver more cold cranking amps (CCA), while a deep-cycle battery can deliver medium currents for a longer period of time.
What size battery do I need for my truck?

How many cold cranking amps do I need for a v6 engine?
Generally, the rule of thumb is 1 Cold Cranking Amp for every cubic inch of engine displacement (2 CCA for diesel engines).
Is a higher CCA battery better?
In general, for both CCA and RC, the higher the number the better. However, if you live in a cold climate, the CCA rating should be an important consideration in choosing a battery.
Can I use a battery with lower cranking amps?
Replacement batteries should equal or exceed the OE battery in ratings. Replacing a battery with a battery that has a lower CCA than the original equipment may result in poor performance.
How much HP does a 454 dyno have?
and was pushing 750 plus hp on the dyno with over 6# of boost on a 8-71. They claim the experts agreed that about 700-750 hp is all a stock bottom end 454 could safely handle.
How much horsepower can a 2 bolt main crank handle?
A two-bolt main, cast crank bottom end, properly machined and assembled would be good for at least 550-600 hp. 6-6300 rpm limit. 4 bolt mains and a steel crank can handle 700hp and 7200 rpm.
How long did a 396 run?
one of my stock 396 engines from a 70 or 71 c-10 truck ran for over 5 years on the street to 7k on a regular basis before it coughed up bearing ( around the 550 hp mark), stock 2 bolt main, stock cast crank, who knows what for rods with factory bolts that was over 25 years old, never balanced with the forged 11.8 to 1 pistons.
How many HP can a cast piston hold?
Dave Birdwell. Stock cast pistons will limit you to about 5800 rpm with 3/8 rods, but cast pistons will hold 500-550 hp. Forged pistons are good to 7000. There's so many different variations of rods/pistons that it all depends on you goals what you need to run.
Can you run forged rods on a 496?
I have built a few big block 496 and 454 engines and such that are 2 bolt mains that are at that power level or a little above. Its always better to run forged rods if you can, also put studs in the mains for any rpms pushing 6k.
Can you beat a remanufactured long block?
budget-wise, it can be hard to beat the price of a "remanufactured" long block... BUT, you may want to shop around at your local engine builders... Everything adds up, but upgrading a few components might not cost as much as you think (maybe studs for a 2-bolt main block and save money on a 2-bolt block compared to finding a 4-bolt block), Good NEW rods, compared to reconditioned old rods, Forged pistons compared to cast, etc... Even a complete stroker rotating assembly can be had for not too much more than "standard" rebuilder-quality internals...
Does the 518cp st block have hypers?
I enjoy reading your engine combos guys. So many options out there. Actually the block I have now on the stand has hypers. Sealed power 518cp st, Just the main bearings need to be changed and I drilled the block for parallel cooling. I can still see the crosshatching on some of the cylinder walls. Also when I pulled out the cam the #2 exhaust cam lobe wiped out. Here's a couple of pictures.
