The Graph above shows the volume traded of all four companies relative to each other over the last five years. In this case, APPL is clearly the most traded by volume, with TSLA and MSFT following. Despite the higher opening prices, it can be seen that AMZN is the lowest traded by volume.

Using the volume or stock prices do not always provide a good comparison between companies. Market Capitalization is the total value of a publicly traded company’s shares and can be used to evaluate how much a company is worth.

Moving Averages

Stock prices tend to be highly volatile and prices change quickly with time. One technical analysis tool which is used to smooth out prices and observe the underlying trend is Moving Averages. To observe any trend or pattern a 50-day or 200-day average can be plotted using python.

Volatility

Volatility measures the rate of fluctuations in the stock prices over time. It can be determined by calculating the percentage increase in stock value compared to the previous day. The bigger the value either positive or negative the more volatile the stock is. It indicates the level of risk associated with the price changes of the stock.

Further steps

Besides the above metrics, Python can also be used to research other fundamental data such as Ratios (Price to Book, Price to Earnings), Revenues, Balances, and Cash Flows. These are all useful in analyzing a company’s performance and likely profitability for long term investment.
