any type of hevi shot will be pattern good depending on your choke. If you dont want to spend that much $ then get a hastings choke and shoot winchester supremes 6 shot 2 1/4 oz shot. Nitro makes a nickel plated 6 oz. shot with 2 5/8 oz of shot, thats what I use with a rhino choke and its a bad combo for turkeys.

Check the position of the safety on the gun and see if you are OK with moving your thumb from the thumb hole to the top of the gun. I thought it was kind of awkward. The 835 I had did not have the thumbhole and it was a great turkey gun.

i shoot winchester 3.5 #5 shot out of mine. also have a tight wad choke in it. i love my setup. ive patterned my gun out to 60 yards and i have about a 20-24 inch diameter of pellets. i took a turkey this past spring at 56 yards. all i do is if it is past 40 yards, i hold about a head (3 inches) high and let her fly! good luck!!

This will be my 3rd season with the thumb hold. I love the gun,weight isnt bad either i dont shoot the 3 1/2 . But when i shoot i use the thumb hold to my advantage on taking the kick out of the gun it works for me. Ya have more torque against the kick with a thumb hold.

I have the reg stock 835 and i shoot 3" Hevi shot. I used to shoot 3.5's but the kick was just a touch to much on these old shoulders. I have killed 18 turkey's with this load and from 10 to 50 yds ole tom aint going noplace but home with me.

I've been hunting with an 835 since 1993. To date, the gun has taken 36 birds. I've shot 3 1/2 and 3's size 6 shot with a Hastings .675 choke tube. Just can't beat it for a turkey gun. I would think the thumbhole would just make it more comfortable to shoot.
