Does your Mossberg 500 have a firing pin problem?
I have a mossberg 500, never had that issue. Sounds like a problem in your firing pin mechanism (bad pin, weak spring, etc.) I also have a Mossberg 500 and have never had your problem. As Sandman said, might be the firing pin mechanism. Any gunsmiths out there?
