Original stock finish..how do I do it?

Thought I would pick everyones brains once again, as you all have been very helpful in the past. Anybody have any recommendations on how to duplicate the pre-war Marlin stock finish? Any help greatly appreciated.

you mention first dipping the stock in varnish and it could be tinted. What do you tint it with. The stock I am about to refinish appears to be a lighter walnut and I would prefer the darker look.
