Summary

Author today bought a TSLA option spread that does everything in the title and more.

What other ways can you get "short" Tesla without the huge risk of a a pure short?

Buying a put is one way but the premium or theta kills you unless your timing is perfect. The Dec 28 370 put would cost over $3,900 and lose $1,100 if Tesla sits still.

What if you want to make more money during a bigger drop on Tesla?

In addition to the single trade suggested at the top, additional spreads can be put on with larger spreads that will make big profits on a large drop. The below trade which is available as this is being written may be your cup of tea.

How about a Tesla spread that has both high success rate and wins big if it falls?

I put this trade on 11-14-2018 it has a 65% chance to profit, costs $464 (max risk) and makes $920 if Tesla sits still like it did in 2017. Worst case if Tesla crashes it makes a $270 (58%) profit. It has high positive theta and low vega.

Conclusion

The pure shorting of stocks is very dangerous and has not worked on Tesla. The suggested option diagonals in this article are much safer over the same period that pure shorts have lost money on Tesla. In fact they would have been quite profitable. Please pass this article on anyone you know that does shorting and see what they think.

Update 11-29-2018

With small TSLA decline today to $341 in TSLA and getting timewise closer to the exp of short options on the two trades I did in article am now gaining more Theta per day (time decay income for me).
