You can easily make this gravy without stock, or without a stock cube. You can use the meat juices from the pan, or make up a quick vegetable stock, using a variety of vegetables you might have in your fridge or pantry.

How to make brown gravy with broth?

Pour the broth or stock into the saucepan, whisking well and continually after each addition. Use chicken or turkey broth to create a gravy for poultry dishes, or beef broth to create a classic beef gravy. For a generic brown gravy, consider using two parts beef broth and one part chicken broth.

How long do you boil onion gravy for?

Turn the heat to high and boil for 10 minutes or until the gravy is slightly thickened.Season with salt and pepper and keep warm until ready to serve. Instructions

Start by adding your oil and onions into a pan on the stove. Heat over medium heat, sauteing the onions for 5-8 minutes. You want to create a golden brown color on the onions. Make sure to lower heat if you see they are beginning to burn.

Notes

Onions - You will want to use yellow or white onions for this recipe. Vidalia onions work great as they offer a nice savory and hint of sweet to the gravy.

Onion Gravy Ingredients

Roasted onions and turkey drippings from my Herb Roasted Turkey Breast recipe are the base of this gravy. Flour (as opposed to cornstarch) is whisked in to thicken it.

How To Make Onion Gravy

For this recipe you’ll either be using the onions and drippings leftover from my Roasted Turkey Breast recipe or you can make them without. Both ways are available in the recipe card below, but you’ll want to start with caramelizing the onions.

Substitutions & Variations

Make Onion Gravy without making Herb Roasted Turkey Breast: Add 4 tablespoons butter and onions to a large skillet over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the desired color is reached on the onions.
