Abstract
This paper investigates an integrated rolling stock deadhead routing and timetabling problem from the rolling stock scheduling in a complicated urban rail transit line.
1. Introduction
Public transport has become an important means of daily urban transportation since the very beginning of urbanization.
2. Problem description
Without loss of generality, we focus on the IRSDRT problem in a complicated URT line (with multiple depots and turn-back stations, multiple line services, and multiple rolling stock compositions) under the Chinese case.
3. Problem redefinition and network construction
An intuitive method to solve the IRSDRT problem is to extend the most related model, proposed by Wang et al. (2019) for a similar problem in a short time period, by considering both the depot deadhead exiting and entering operations in an operation day.
4. Model formulation
In this section, we formulate the studied IRSDRT problem as IM, based on the generalized set partitioning type problem redefinition presented in Section 3.1. The main notations used in our models (IM, AM, and RIM) are formally defined in Tables 1 and 2.
5. Solution method
In linear and integer programming, two efficient decomposition algorithms, row generation and column generation, are widely used to deal with large-scale problems ( Wolsey, 1998 ).
6. Computational experiments
In this section, a set of hypothetical instances (constructed based on the hypothetical URT line shown in Fig. 2 ), a set of practical-size realistic instances, and a large real-world instance (constructed and collected from the Chongqing rail transit line 3 in China) are used to assess the potential of our approaches.
