If you decide to take that stock and want it to darken, apply BLO as your first 2 coats before applying Tru Oil. Applying oil finish also require the the best surface prep you can give it prior. Sand it well, steel wool 0000-grit, then micromesh if you have access to it (it goes down to 12,000 grit or 2 microns).

i have a walnut stock on my gun with a stunning grain on it, i would like to darken it a bit and make the tiger strips stand out, i have done a few stocks in the past with phillips walnut oil but i want to try something different any advice

I use that stuff - applied over time it does darken the wood and enhance any grain that's there.

As mazza said...lol...It does work but you would need to strip it back down to bare wood for it to get into the grain and take...Also needs about 200 tea bags and hours of wiping it in but would leave a lovely matte finish in the eventual end...Used to do this on the cabinets in the workshop to age/antique them but on an R10, really not advisable IMHO...Cuprinol would be easier...lol.

Oil of alkanet and Danish oil. The stock was a bit bland so I stripped it and refinished it. The oil of alkanet lifts the grain and darkens the stock slightly.
