What is the crankshaft size of the LSX engine?
Like all of the base LSX engines found in the Corvette, it has a 3.62-inch stroke crankshaft.
How much horsepower does a boosted LS3 engine have?
At or around 650 horsepower with a boosted LS3, you won’t be stretching the limits of the internal components or the block. The LS3, like many of the other modern engines that are in production today, are more than strong enough to handle much of what you can throw at it, to an extent anyway.
What is the LS6 engine?
It is an improved version of the LS1 produced for the 2001 Z06 Corvette. The LS6 powered the 2001-04 Corvette Z06 and the 2004-05 Cadillac CTS-V.
What is the Best LS engine for a turbo?
The 5.3L was by far the favorite among turbo LS owners, due no doubt to the combination of reduced cost and tremendous availability. GM produced millions of 5.3L LM7s (and its variants), but the larger 6.0Ls were (relatively speaking) few and far between.
How much power can a stock LS crank handle?
Registered. the stock crank can easily handle 800+ hp. There are some using them up to 1000 hp.
How much HP can a stock 6.0 bottom end handle?
Even a decade ago, before PCM tuning was anywhere near as refined as it is now, several 6.0L owners proved the 6.0L's bottom end could withstand 700-rwhp. Today, a lot of serious enthusiasts conclude that the 800 hp 6.0 Power Stroke range gets you into unchartered waters with a 6.0L.
How much horsepower can a cast steel crank handle?
500 hpCommonly used in entry-level aftermarket crankshafts, cast steel has greater carbon content than nodular iron, and a tensile strength of about 105,000 psi. "In a typical small-block, a cast-steel crank can easily handle 500 hp.
How much HP can a forged crank handle?
That's why forged cranks cost three to four times more than cast cranks, but the trade-off is a dramatic increase in strength. A typical small-block cast crank is good up to 500 hp, while a 4340 forging can take 1,500 hp.
How much HP can stock 6.0 Heads handle?
In fact, the 6.0L's block, rotating assembly and cylinder heads can support roughly 700rwhp in stock form.
How much HP can a 6.0 Vortec handle?
about 800 hpThey can handle about 800 hp and 7,000 rpm in boosted applications (at least for a while). They are likely to bend before they break when subjected to real track conditions. If you're getting forged pistons, upgrade to forged connecting rods at the same time.
How much HP does a crankshaft add?
Today's cast-steel crankshafts are remarkably robust, capable of handling 500-plus horsepower in small-blocks, and more than 750 hp in big-blocks. Most manufacturers recommended forged steel cranks in applications that exceed those horsepower figures.
What is better forged or cast crankshaft?
But tensile strength is only one part of the picture. A forged-steel crank has an elongation rating of 20-22 percent before failure--far greater than cast iron, so ductility is the forged crank's real advantage over cast iron.
What is stronger cast or forged?
Forged parts had a 26% higher tensile strength than the cast parts. This means you can have stronger shackles at a lower part weight. Forged parts have a 37% higher fatigue strength resulting in a factor of six longer fatigue life.
Do you need a forged crank?
The time spent at high load and rpm determine the need for a forged crank every bit as much as a peak power level. So if you have a performance engine, you now know that a forged crank is the way you should go for longevity, but which one? “Lunati has two lines of cranks: Voodoo and Signature Series,” McLaughlin says.
What is the best crankshaft material?
In the high performance crankshaft world, the nickel-chrome-moly alloy SAE-4340 (AMS-6414) has been a favorite in both forged and billet applications. It is used because of its very high strength and fatigue properties, coupled with good ductility and impact resistance at high strengths.
How do I choose a crankshaft?

Short-Block
The engine itself is out of a '03 Chevy van that was wrecked, and is "stock-ish" according to Mario. The LS still retains the factory crank, rods, and pistons, but the rings are from Mahle, and have been opened up quite a bit.
Fuel System
If there's an overkill portion of Mario's car it's probably the fuel system, which is built to the hilt. First fuel travels through a -10AN line to an Aeromotive Eliminator fuel pump, along with an Aeromotive regulator and -8AN return. Injectors are big 200 lb/hr Fuel Injector Connection units, which are compatible with both gasoline and E85.
Transmission
One of the more interesting aspects of the build is the transmission, which is just a warmed-over Powerglide. Mario went through and rebuilt it with a few choice goodies, including a TCI trans brake, valve body, input shaft, and additional clutch packs. Other than the PTC torque converter, the rest of the transmission is all stock.
The '67 Camaro
Part of the reason Mario's car is so quick is that it weighs a light 2,750 pounds with him in the driver's seat. The chassis is a mild steel rectangular tube affair that was built on a budget just like the rest of the car. Mario says that his plan on most tracks is to leave at around 5 psi and 4,000 rpm and let the car do its thing.

How long is a K1 crank?
The crank is a forged K1 unit with a 3.900-inch stroke. That's 0.278 of an inch longer than the 3.622-inch stock stroke, but still shorter than many engine builders will use because Harrell says the shorter stroke creates a broader powerband.
Is LS block strong?
The LS block is already strong, and choosing one cast in iron helps even more, but it still has its limits. That said, the old-school method of adding a block filler is hard to beat, so that's one of the first steps when making and OEM block withstand big power.
Is HP softer than XP?
The aluminum- based HP bearings are softer than King's XP race bearings, but Harrell says this material is a better fit for use with aluminum connecting rods. Even with all the aluminum used, Harrell says that with a proper tune-up this engine should be good for at least 200 passes. See all 13 photos.
How much horsepower does a LS3 have?
Reaching the 500 horsepower mark with an LS3 is really representative of the “real world” scenario for most hobbyists. It involves only a nominal increase in power from the stock rated numbers – 70hp for the Corvette and 74hp for the Camaro – and doesn’t require a huge investment of time and money in order to achieve.

What rods should I use for LS3?
According to Borschke, aluminum rods are only suggested for use in full-on LS3 race motors, and unless you’re going that route, recommends sticking with steel.
How many bolts does a Corvette have?
The bulkhead accommodates six-bolt, cross-bolted main bearing caps that work to limit crank flex, that, in addition to a structural oil pan, stiffens the overall structure of the engine. Like all of the base LSX engines found in the Corvette, it has a 3.62-inch stroke crankshaft.
Is the LS3 strong?
The LS3, like many of the other modern engines that are in production today, are more than strong enough to handle much of what you can throw at it, to an extent anyway. Many individuals and engine builders have pushed the LS3 into this realm of horsepower on the stock internals without fault.
