Should I swap out my stock clutch for a race clutch?

You may think it a good idea to swap out your stock clutch with an aftermarket heavy-duty race item to handle all of your car's extra power. If you use that car for anything other than racing, you won't have a good time, according to the folks at Team O'Neil Rally School.

What is a race clutch and how does it work?

While a normal clutch features a springs and low-friction material used to absorb slipping and hard launches, a race clutch features ultra-grabby material that limit's the driver's ability to slip without overheating the disc.

What are the different parts of a clutch?

While the clutch is often referred to as one unit, several parts make up the assembly. The clutch disc is a plate with friction material on either side designed to grab the flywheel and pressure plate, connecting the engine to the transmission. The pressure plate is what allows the clutch to be released so that gears can be changed.

The clutch disc is a plate with friction material on either side designed to grab the flywheel and pressure plate, connecting the engine to the transmission. The pressure plate is what allows the clutch to be released so that gears can be changed. The pressure plate, clutch disc, and flywheel all eventually need replacement due to wear.

How long does it take to change a clutch?

This is entirely up to you. With all of the tools and an extra buddy or two for help, the clutch can be changed in around six hours. If you’re doing any other work or need to use a makeshift tool, add on time. Give yourself a full weekend to safely complete the job at home.

What is the purpose of a clutch disc?

Why does my clutch smell?

Burning smell from a slipping clutch. When the friction material on the clutch disk wears down, it loses its ability to hold the torque the engine produces. Once this happens, the disc will slip in-between the pressure plate and flywheel, resulting in a loss of drive.

I dunno...if you buy a car that's not fast enough for you in the first place and modify it accordingly, and the standard fitted kit doesn't stand up to it, you can hardly blame VW. If the standard clutch is failing under standard performance levels, then yeah, not good.

That's also the point mate the clutches are failing at standard power with very little mileage

Note how VW put a metal cage around the ECU to stop it being tampered with in a manual car but not in a DSG.

10k on my year old R. Mainly riven by by partner who very rarely puts her foot down, let alone rags the car. Took the car out last weekend and clutch is slipping, not even at max load. We've both had high powered cars and have never had a clutch go between us.

Modern engines are producing more torque, but OEM clutches aren't getting any stronger. Same story in mk5 & mk6. . . Slipping with stock power just shows how close VW are to the limit now before having to develop a stronger clutch.

Yup, it's a poor show saving a few pennies with the clutch then not covering it with a reasonable warranty.

I used to defend the Kia Stinger adamantly, but the Kia dealers have worn me down

I now completely understand why regular people aren't passionate about driving

My BRZ is currently in the shop for a couple days, and I got a loaner, commuter grade Legacy. It's an automatic vs my manual, so I knew throttle response was going to be pretty poor/weird. What I didn't expect was the absolute boredom and dreariness from all the other inputs.

Is anyone else sick and tired of seeing 12 minute drag race videos

It's literally 12 seconds of content stretched unbelievably thin across 10 minutes of video.

Installing the parts to the Golf R

The installation was completed over two days, but Revo suggest it can be done in a day-and-a-half. The time consuming parts are swapping out the turbo and the intercooler.

Direct Replacement Upgrades

As with the turbo, the Revo intercooler and Pipe Upgrade Kit has been designed to directly replace the restrictive and lower budget OEM items. Again, most of this will be hidden, but it does its job feeding the 2.0 TSI engine with cooler air. Essential with a big power forced induction unit like this.

Revo IS38ETR Turbo vs standard IS38 Turbo

The Revo IS38ETR offers significant performance gains over a stock IS38. It comes with a new OEM compressor and turbine housings, so it’s a straight swap with no modifications needed. Every weak point of the stock IS38 has been enhanced. The compressor and turbine housings have been CNC re-profiled to match the larger wheels and stronger shaft.

The IS38ETR V2 is now here

The IS38 ETR Turbo has now been enhanced further with our latest V2 revision. See more information here.

Revo ECU Performance Software

Revo’s goal with their ECU Software was to enable the IS38ETR to be fitted without any loss of reliability or drivability. It had to work on a stock engine without the need for forged internals. To achieve this, they spent two years testing the set-up ensuring the kit carried out thousands of miles worldwide.

Maintaining the Character of the Golf R

The Revo IS38ETR package not only transforms the Golf R into an extremely fast car, but it does so without compromising drivability. It’s one thing to create a quick car, but quite another to do so while maintaining its original character.

While a normal clutch features a springs and low-friction material used to absorb slipping and hard launches, a race clutch features ultra-grabby material that limit's the driver's ability to slip without overheating the disc.

What happens if you overheat your clutch?

Overheat it enough and your clutch and flywheel will actually fuse together, locking you out from controlling what gear you're in. In addition to hard launches and stress-filled hill starts, you'll also have to worry about stranding yourself on the road.

Is a stage 3 clutch good?

That stage 3 clutch might be great for holding power, but it's not going to do great on your commute to work. You may think it a good idea to swap out your stock clutch with an aftermarket heavy-duty race item to handle all of your car's extra power.
