The general rule is that for a pure sporting clays gun, I would leave about 2″ between the lens of the shooting glasses and the nearest part of the right hand (behind the thumb) when the gun is mounted. This is usually best tested by mounting and swinging with the eyes closed. Also- when in doubt, go with a little longer stock.

Can you change the length of the stock on a pistol?

Yes, moving the trigger fore and aft will change the numerical stock length, but not the practical one. Where you put your hand on the pistol grip determines the real length of the stock. Unfortunately, this is very hard to measure, so people continue to use the old trigger to butt length.

Should I lengthen my stock?

Slight increases to stock height have to be made when lengthening a stock just to keep your face height were it was on the shorter stock. Also, if you crawl your stock a bit, you are tipping your head forward slightly (a very common technique among American shooters).

How long should a trap stock be?

I have always needed a trap height stock to see over the rib, but have noticed that my stocks have grown in length from the standard 14 1/4″ to 15″- 15 1/4″ over my last quarter century of shooting. When I competed in International Skeet, I used a standard Remington 1100 trap stock towards the end of my career.

How does stock length affect the stock height?

Most stocks (unless they are Monte Carlo configuration) slope slightly from front to back. Making the stock longer will move your face back on the stock and thus place it very slightly lower. Slight increases to stock height have to be made when lengthening a stock just to keep your face height were it was on the shorter stock.

What is the correct length of pull for a rifle?

Many rifles and shotguns are manufactured with a standard length of pull assumed to fit most shooters. This is often approximately 13.5 in (34 cm) for rifles and about 2 cm (0.8 in) longer for shotguns.

How does length of pull affect shooting?

You might experience more felt recoil if the LOP is too short. If the length of pull is too long, the buttstock can get caught up in your clothing and can affect the speed of your shots. A too short or too long LOP will make the gun uncomfortable to shoot and most likely make you an inaccurate shooter.

How long is an ar15 stock?

The average length of pull for a standard AR-15 is around 13 inches. An adjustable stock works well for shooters whose ideal length of pull doesn't meet this average measurement. Length of pull can also vary based on the clothes you're wearing.

How is length pull measured?

The body's LOP is measured from the inside of the arm at the bend in the elbow, where your forearm meets your bicep, to the tip of your trigger finger, which needs to be bent at a 90-degree angle simulating a correct finger position to achieve a straight rearward trigger press.

How the construction and conformation of your rifle stock changes everything downrange

The comb on most modern stocks' combs are too low to constantly align the eye with a scope.

Comb Height And Riflescopes

Looking at the way stocks have evolved over the past century, we’ve seen a change in sighting systems, with the telescopic sight playing a much larger role. However, the combs of modern stocks—both walnut and synthetic—don’t seem to have followed suit.

Combs And Hard Irons

While having your comb at the proper height for an optic is great if you use nothing but optics, what about those rifles that routinely use both scopes and iron sights? I’m speaking mainly of the big-bore rifles used for dangerous game hunting, which might be required to make a 150- or 200-yard shot, then have the optic removed for close-quarter follow-up work.

Locking In The Length

Length of pull (LOP) is also an attribute that many American rifles don’t get right—I’m usually hunched over when shooting the standard 13¾-inch length of pull. At just a shade under 6 feet tall, with long arms for my frame, I prefer a longer stock. If I’m wearing a heavier hunting jacket, I like a 14-inch LOP.

Agreeing On Grip

While all three of these men take great pride in their own stock designs, I asked them which of the popular rifle stock designs appealed to them most. All agreed the Winchester Model 70 is a classic design, and probably that which is the most appealing. Bansner also appreciated the older Ruger M77.

Wood Vs. Not Wood

Lastly, I brought up the classic wood versus synthetic argument, with some surprising results. Sells embraces the use of both materials, each having their specific purpose, but embracing walnut for the classic-style bolt-actions and double rifles. Buck is a straight-up wood traditionalist: “Wood. Full stop.”
