How are pipe fittings sized?

They're sized by the nominal size of the pipe, or the inner diameter. If you buy a 1/2 inch thread and measure the diameter, it will measure over 1 inch because it's designed to have a nominal pipe fitting.

What is a 3/8″ line for a sink?

A 3/8″ line for a sink supply or a dishwasher measures 3/8″ OD. However, if it is called 1/4L or 3/8L tubing, that means it is an inside measurement and the tubing is actually 3/8″ and 1/2″ OD correspondingly.

What is a 3/8 copper pipe used for?

It is used to supply humidifiers, icemakers, dishwashers and sink and toilet supply lines. 1/4″ copper tubing for the icemaker or humidifier measures 1/4″ outside diameter. A 3/8″ line for a sink supply or a dishwasher measures 3/8″ OD.

What is the standard thickness of a pipe?

How do I know what size pipe to use?

To find it, measure around the circumference of the pipe with flexible measuring tape. Divide the circumference by pi, or about 3.14159. For example, if the circumference is 12.57 inches (319 mm), you would divide by pi, and get an outside diameter of about 4 inches (100 mm).

What pipe fits inside 1 1 2 pipe?

Will this inside connector fit inside the 1-1/2" Flexible PVC Pipe? As stated on the product's page, it's only compatible with schedule 40 PVC pipe. Our inside connectors are only compatible with Schedule 40 PVC pipe of the same nominal size, and they will not fit with any other schedules or kinds of pipe.

Is pipe diameter inside or outside?

In short: Tube is measured by outside diameter, pipe is measured by inside diameter. There is often confusion as to which size die the customer actually needs - Pipe Size or Tubing Size. Keep in mind that pipe size refers to a nominal - not actual - inside pipe diameter. Schedule refers to the pipe's wall thickness.

How do you determine your fitting size?

You can always identify AN fittings based on the male thread size (outside diameter). These sizes are constant regardless of brand, hose type, or fitting configuration. If your fitting has a convex 37 degree flare at the end, the threads will tell you the AN size (and vice-versa).

Is pipe measured by inside diameter?

When it comes to measurement of pipe, it is measure by the inside diameter, often called the nominal diameter. Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) is a North American set of standard sizes for pipe. The term nominal refers to pipe in non-specific terms and identifies the inside diameter with a non-dimensional number.

Is galvanized pipe measured by ID or OD?

Tubing is measured by the OUTSIDE DIAMETER (O.D.), specified in inches (e.g., 1.250) or fraction of an inch (eg. 1-1/4″).

Which way does a pipe thread go?

Pipe has clockwise (right - hand) threads on one end and counterclockwise (left - hand) threads on the other end. When you use a wrench to turn, connections on both ends tighten at the same time.

What is Schedule 80 pipe?

With thicker, stronger walls than standard-wall pipe, this Schedule 80 pipe can handle heavy duty industrial plumbing and water supply applications, such as water processing, waste water treatment, and irrigation. Use for pressures up to 550 psi. Suitable for outdoor environments, it contains an additive that protects against the damaging effects of ultraviolet light. Connect to UV-resistant PVC pipe fittings.

What is a polypropylene fitting?

Made of polypropylene, these fittings won’t deteriorate when exposed to the damaging effects of ultraviolet light and are suitable to use outdoors. They have the chemical resistance to withstand acids, solvents, and other harsh substances.

What pressure is standard for a water pipe fitting?

Connect these fittings to standard-wall plastic pipe for use in low- to medium-pressure applications up to 810 psi. They are the industry standard for residential and commercial plumbing and water supply applications.

What pressure can a plastic pipe handle?

Pipe can handle pressures up to 900 psi.

What is PTFE pipe used for?

It is commonly used in high-purity chemical flow processes, such as semiconductor and clean room applications.

Do you need a sleeve for SAE fittings?

No sleeve is required to assemble these fittings, which makes for a faster, more convenient installation compared to 37° flared fittings. They are also known as refrigeration and SAE fittings.

What is Nominal Pipe Size?

Nominal pipe size (NPS) is the number that defines the size of the pipe. For example, when you say 6” pipe, the 6” is the nominal size of that pipe. However, for the pipe sizes, NPS 14 and above Outside Diameter is the same as NPS. To understand this concept, you have to learn the way pipes are manufactured.

What is Pipe NB (Nominal Bore)?

NPS is frequently referred as an NB (Nominal Bore). As such, there is no difference between NB and NPS. NB is also an American way to refer pipe dimensions. I have also seen that when pipe dimensions are shown in mm (DN) people refer pipe sizes in NB. So when someone says 25nb pipe or 50nb pipe basically they are talking about DN.

What is DN (Diameter Nominal) Pipe Sizes?

DN or Diameter Nominal is an International designation (SI or Matric Designator) and also a European equivalent of NPS to show pipe sizes. Here, you have to note that DN shows pipe sizes differently than NPS.

What is Pipe Schedule?

The pipe schedule is the way pipe wall thickness is mentioned. To simplify the ordering of the pipe ASME committee has developed Schedule Number which is based on modified Barlow’s wall thickness formula.

Pipe Schedule for Stainless Steel Pipe

Cost of stainless steel pipe is much higher than carbon steel pipe. Due to corrosion resistance properties of stainless steel, advancement of high alloy stainless steel and fusion welding less thickness pipe can be work satisfactorily without fear of early failure.

Dimension Tolerance for Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel Pipe

Common dimension tolerances are listed in ASTM A530. However, each product has its own requirements and when given in that specification that will govern over the A530.

What is 1/4 copper tubing?

1/4″ copper tubing for the icemaker or humidifier measures 1/4″ outside diameter. A 3/8″ line for a sink supply or a dishwasher measures 3/8″ OD.

What is the size of a kitchen drain line?

Customers say the kitchen drain line measures just shy of 2 inches but is called 1 1/2 inches, and 7/8-inch line has a 1/2-inch valve . Pipe sizes explained are as follows.

What is nominal size?

Nominal is defined as ‘not exact’ or ‘trade name’. I have been told that the nominal size of pipe is the inside diameter (id) of the smallest fitting of that size. As a rule, the fitting with the smallest id is a street elbow, whether it is a 45 or 90 degree, also called 1/8 or 1/4 bend respectively. If you were to take a 1 1/2-inch 90 degree ...

What size tubular parts are used for wash basins?

They all measure by the outside diameter and are available in two basic sizes. 1 1/4″ for wash basins and 1 1/2″ for everything else. Tubular parts usually seal with jam nuts and washers and come oversized on one end so one part can slip into another.

Is soft copper tubing the same size as galvanized tubing?

Its measurements emulate that of copper tubing, which is smaller than galvanized pipe of the same size. Here are the exceptions to the rule. Soft copper tubing that comes in rolls is usually referred by its outside diameter.

What is nominal pipe size?

Nominal pipe size is the measurement based on the inner diameter rather than the actual diameter. When you're planning the plumbing for a house or another building, you calculate how much flow rate you need through the inner diameter of the tube or the pipe.

What size CTS fittings are used for plumbing?

CTS is actually available all the way down to 1/4 inch, although it's not used frequently. The most common CTS fittings are 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, and larger sizes because they're used for household plumbing more frequently than ID nominal size parts.

How are threads sized?

Threads are sized just like the CTS fittings. They're sized by the nominal size of the pipe, or the inner diameter. If you buy a 1/2 inch thread and measure the diameter, it will measure over 1 inch because it's designed to have a nominal pipe fitting. The female fitting should be sized just as large as the male fitting to get the right fit.

Why are OD fittings larger than their labeled size?

The fittings used with those pipes measure larger than their labeled size because they connect over the outside of a plumbing pipe. The size of OD tubing is typically marked in fine print on the side of the tube. If the tubing is sized by the OD, then you should look for fittings sized appropriately. For example, a 1/2 OD push-to-connect fitting ...

Is a female fitting the same size as a male fitting?

The female fitting should be sized just as large as the male fitting to get the right fit . If you measure the actual thread size of a 1/2 inch fitting, then it will not actually measure 1/2 of an inch, even though that's what the part says. To recap:

What is the diameter of a 3/8 SAE thread?

The major diameter of most external threads is somewhat smaller than its nominal diameter; i.e. a 3/8" SAE thread is rarely exactly 3/8". It's usually a few thousandths smaller, both to provide clearance for a specified class of fit and to prevent the crest of the thread from being sharp; it should be normally be truncated. For instance a Class 2A 3/8-16 thread has a major diameter of about 0.373". Major diameter for an external 3/8" thread can be as small as 0.367".#N#This is all important when using a die because if the rod is exactly 0.375, or in the case of hot rolled steel if it's not perfectly round or if it's actually a little oversize, then it will give you fits using a die. You may want to use 3/8" cold rolled steel for this, as it will have better dimensional accuracy than hot rolled.

What is tapping a drill?

Tapping is a case where you pick a drill that fits the dimension of the root of the thread, not the crest which is the nominal dimension. But in threading a bolt or shaft, you're talking about the outside dimension, which is the nominal dimension. So if you want a 3/8" bolt thread, your shaft has to start there, or close to it.

Is a round rod always round?

Round rod isn't always round BTW. There are dies for cutting threads and dies for trueing threads. Watch what you buy. You might consider taking them to a shop for a nice job. Consult with them before you go doing any bending and shaping to make sure they can work with your end product.

Is a drill rod hard?

Drill rod is normally supplied in a fully annealed condition. It's only hard after undergoing hardening; in any case, drill rod wouldn't really be an appropriate material for a shifter shaft, in either condition.
