There are two ports machined into the master cylinder bore for each brake fluid reservoir. One port is the by-pass port, the other is a compensating port. The by-pass port supplies fluid to the master cylinder bore when the brakes are not applied.

What is primary and secondary on a master cylinder?

The Master Cylinder in Action. When you press the brake pedal, it pushes on the primary piston through a linkage. Pressure builds in the cylinder and lines as the brake pedal is depressed further. The pressure between the primary and secondary piston forces the secondary piston to compress the fluid in its circuit.

What connects to the brake master cylinder?

For manual brakes, the master cylinder is attached directly to the firewall and linked to the brake pedal. In power-assisted brakes, the master cylinder is attached to a brake booster, which supplies more power to the braking system.

Is there a front and back on a master cylinder?

Disc brakes didn't require the same volume in the reservoir. Today, most master cylinders have the same size reservoir as well as masters sharing the same reservoir. These are still considered dual reservoir systems because the internals are separated front to rear.

Why does the master cylinder have two pistons in brake?

The brake pedal squeezes two pistons inside the master cylinder, which in turn push brake fluid down two separate lines to send equal pressure to all four wheels. The two springs behind the pistons push back when the pedal is released, effectively sucking the pads away from the brake discs.

Do front or rear brakes engage first?

A lot more stability is provided by having the rear brakes engage before the front brakes. Applying the rear brakes first helps keep the car in a straight line.

The replacement cylinder had just the opposite (smaller fitting in the front and larger fitting in the rear).

What happens when a master cylinder goes bad?

The master cylinder is the part of the braking system that presses the fluid into the caliper or brake shoes. When it goes bad, it loses pressure causing the brake pedal to go to the floor. It’s easy to find.

Why does my brake pedal go to the floor?

1. Fluid Leak. A brake fluid leak is one of the most common reasons that the brake pedal would go to the floor. It also happens to be the easiest to check. All you have to do is take the lid off of the master cylinder reservoir and check the fluid level. If the brake fluid is low, filling it back up is not going to fix the problem.

What happens if the brakes on a Silverado go bad?

If any part of this system goes bad, the brake pedal can go to the floor. We don’t recommend driving anywhere with a brake system that is compromised.
